According to Krafton, Garena Free Fire and Garena Free Fire Max have extensively copied many aspects of PUBG: Battlegrounds, including the copyrighted unique game opening “airdrop” feature, gameplay and structure, locations, weapon combinations and selection, and overall color schemes, materials, and textures.

Garena allegedly collected millions from in-app sales, according to the PUBG creator. Apple and Google “similarly earned a substantial amount of revenue from their distribution of Free Fire.”

Krafton claims that on December 21, it requested that Garena “immediately stop its exploitation of Free Fire and Free Fire Max,” which they refused. Apple and Google were also requested to stop distributing the games, but both remain in the app stores.

Krafton has also requested that YouTube remove recordings of Free Fire and Free Fire Max gameplay “that include elements that blatantly infringe Battlegrounds and, separately, the infringing feature-length film,” something YouTube has yet to do.

Krafton said that in 2017, Garena sold a game in Singapore that “copied” PUBG: Battlegrounds. According to the complaint, no license agreement was made while the allegations related to this game were addressed.
